Chariton Dental
September 2024
Chariton Area Chamber/Main Street is proud to feature one of our local contributing businesses in the monthly Small Business Spotlight.
This month, we are featuring Chariton Dental, a dentist office located on the west side of the Chariton square. Dr. Tyson Tanner is a great supporter of Chariton Area Chamber/Main Street and we are happy to spotlight him & his business this month!
What is your job title and role?
Hi, I'm Tyson Tanner, the dentist and owner of Chariton Dental.
How long have you been in business in Chariton/Lucas County?
I bought Chariton Dental back in November 2020 from Dr. Rips and am going on 3 plus years of owning.
Why do you do what you do?
I got into dentistry watching my Grandpa take care of me and my siblings. My Grandpa was basically retired and would only come in to take care of family and friends but watching my Grandma assist and Grandpa work stirred a desire to do the same. I grew up thinking the dentist was great! I would get to hang out with Grandparents and get a toy at the end. Sometimes, they would take us out to eat at a local buffet after. I literally thought everyone's experience was similar until my friend across the street burst my bubble and let me know how much he hated going.
Was there a specific moment or realization where you made the decision to start your own business?
Later, after I became a dentist, I would think "Why did I like going there?" and one of the biggest things that stuck out is that it didn't hurt. I've tried in every appointment to do the same for my patients, our goal each time is literally "painless dentistry". Painless from beginning to end. I'm not perfect each time in my goal, sometime previous fears or tooth infections prevent this, but it feels good to change someone's perception of going to the dentist.
Why did you choose Chariton for your business?
My wife and I decided on Chariton, Iowa for a few reasons, but I still remember coming and seeing the square for the first time and thought it was a place I wanted to be. We've always been drawn to smaller communities and when we saw this practice listed we thought it would be a good opportunity and area to raise our kids. Previously I had worked in downtown Des Moines and had done some education at the University of Iowa and we loved the "Midwest-Nice" when we lived here. Ashley, my wife, grew up for a time in Creston and her dad was rasied in Bettendorf. So it made it an easy decision to come back to Iowa as I was working at a dental clinic for Veteran in Oregon.
What are your biggest rewards?
We feel blessed to have our staff helping in so many areas to help our practice be a place where the entire family comes and enjoys coming to the dentist, just as I did growing up.
