This month, we are featuring Allen Sporting Goods owned and operated by Dylan and Bevin Allen. Find out why they decided to open a sporting goods store in Chariton, IA, and what makes them continue to keep their business going.
What is your job title and role?
We are Dylan and Bevin Allen, Owners of Allen Sporting Goods.
How long have you been in business in Chariton/Lucas County?
We started Allen Sporting Goods and have been open since November 3rd, 2020.
Describe your business
We are a retail sporting goods store. We carry Under Armour clothing, shoes and all kinds of sport equipment. We also have everything you need for hunting along wtih the ability to sell/order fire arms. One of our most popular items this year has been our Brumate (drinkware) products.
Why do you do what you do?
We believe in small businesses and keeping business in Chariton.
Was there a specific moment or realization where you made the decision to start your own business?
We honestly don't know how it happened. We think the pandemic and not being able to go anywhere made us realize we need more in Chariton. We love Chariton and dislike that the square had mostly disappearred. So we thought about what our town needed the most.
What inspires you to keep at it each day?
Being able to help people from our community by not having to go outside of Chariton for sporting goods.
Why did you choose Chariton for your business?
We were both raised here and love our community. We also understood the struggle of having to drive out of town to get things we need for sports and having somewhere in town was something we knew Chariton needed.
What are your biggest challenges as a business owner?
The ability to get the items we need/want in our store due to us being such a small business from a small community.
What are your biggest rewards?
Being able to support our community not only by providing our products to them but by supporting local organizations.
What will people get from your business that they won't get anywhere else?
Our customer service. We will meet anyone at the shop any day or time even when we are not working if they are in need of an item.
