Ab's Fab Desserts

August 2024

Chariton Area Chamber/Main Street is proud to feature one of our local contributing businesses in the monthly Small Business Spotlight.

This month, we are featuring
Ab's Fab Desserts, an at-home cottage bakery. Abby has been open for a little over a year and is becoming a community staple one cookie at a time.

What is your job title and role?

Abby Lockman, owner of Ab's Fab Desserts

How long have you been in business in Chariton/Lucas County?

I'm the first owner for my business, however a love for baking definitely runs in the family. It's been about a year and a half now.

Describe your business

I'm a home cottage bakery. I make cakes, cookies, macarons, and more - for both special orders and pop up events.

Why do you  do what you do?

I've grown up baking and truly love and find it rewarding so we took the leap to turn it into a career that could let me stay home with my kids.

Was there a specific moment or realization where you made the decision to start your own business?

I'd had family encouraging me to sell my desserts for a very long time and i very tentatively agreed and the support was overwhemling. I really couldn't have done this without the initial push from the people that love me.

What inspires you to keep at it each day?

My kids. Running a business from your home & having small children isn't for the week but in the thick of it, during the late nights, early mornings and inevitable fails, I remember I do this for them.

Why did you choose Chariton for your business?

Chariton is where I grew up. I am a hometown girl. I never had the pull to leave and I'll always root for Chariton to succeed. This business has given me the opportunity to be involved in our community in a positive way and I absolutely love to be able to give back to the place that raised me when I can.

What are your biggest challenges as a business owner?

It's just me. I do the planning, the work, the clean up, the advertisement, all myself. There's no fill in and no sick days without letting someone down. Sometimes finding the balance is hard.

What are your biggest rewards?

The people. There is no greater reward for me than seeing someone's joy when they pick up their order or hear from someone I was recommended. Seeing things I create with my own 2 hands be apart of events in people's lives makes me feel like a part of something.

What will people get from your business that they won't get anywhere else?

The thing about baked goods is they are truly unique to the person that made them. You could go to twenty places and get a chocolate chip cookie, but there's only ONE place you could get an Ab's Fab cookie, and that's from ME!
