Nate Furnal and Ryan Konrad – Co-Owners
How long have you been in business in Chariton/Lucas County?
The Stubbs Petroleum name has been in Chariton since 2020. While Stubbs Petroleum started in Pleasantville in 1993, the foundation of who we are today has a significant history in Chariton. Originally, Woodcock Oil Company serviced the Chariton area with propane and fuel. Woodcock Oil was purchased by
Southern Iowa Oil, and Southern Iowa Oil was purchased by Stubbs Petroleum in 2020 at which time Chariton became our “home base”.
Describe your business
Stubbs Petroleum is a family-owned company that provides propane, gas, diesel, and bulk oil in Central Iowa and into Missouri. Our office is located in Chariton, Iowa and we have bulk plants in Albia, Centerville, Chariton, Corydon, and Pleasantville, Iowa.
Why did you choose Chariton for your business?
Why do you do what you do?
After the purchase of Southern Iowa Oil, given the various locations of our bulk plants, it made the most sense to relocate our office to Chariton.
We believe our customers deserve to do business with a company that has their
and their communities; best interests at heart. We want to be able to offer safe and affordable products with reliable service.
Was there a specific moment or realization where you made the decision to start your own business?
Nate’s uncle, Joe Stubbs, started Stubbs Propane in 1993. In 2002, Joe was looking to retire, and we had the opportunity to purchase the business.

What inspires you to keep at it each day?
Our customers and employees.
What are your biggest challenges as a business owner?
Our industry has several significant challenges, including supply chain disruptions, rising equipment costs, and evolving regulatory landscapes.
What are your biggest rewards?
Our biggest reward is the relationships we have built with our customers.
What will people get from your business that they won't get anywhere else?
There are a few things that come to mind. Our employees go above and beyond to care for our customers by giving them the best service. Since we are a locally owned company, we know the importance of giving back to the communities we serve. You won’t get that from a big corporate company.
